If you've just started building a bioactive vivarium or terrarium, you've probably heard the word "isopods" thrown around. But what exactly are they, and why are keepers so obsessed with them? This guide covers everything a first-time keeper needs to know — including which species to start with.
What are isopods? Isopods are small crustaceans (yes, related to woodlice!) that live in the soil layer of a bioactive setup. They break down waste, dead plant matter, and shed skin, keeping your enclosure clean and balanced naturally — no chemicals needed.
Why use them in a bioactive setup?
- They process waste before it becomes harmful
- They aerate the substrate as they burrow
- They're fascinating to watch and breed readily
- Once established, they reduce your maintenance significantly
Which species should a beginner start with? For first-time keepers, we recommend starting with a hardy, fast-breeding species. Two great options from Dainty's Pods:
Porcellio Laevis – Dairy Cow Isopods — one of the most popular beginner species. Robust, fast-breeding, and excellent cleaners.Porcellionide Pruinosus – Powder Orange Isopods — another brilliant starter species, known for their striking colour and active nature.
How do I set them up? Add your isopods to a moist substrate layer with leaf litter, cork bark hides, and a moisture gradient. They'll do the rest. Aim for a small starter culture of 10–20 individuals and let them establish before adding more.
