Leaf Litter — The Foundation of Every Great Isopod Enclosure

If there's one thing no isopod enclosure should be without, it's leaf litter. Mimicking the natural forest floor environment that isopods call home, leaf litter is quite simply the most important and versatile addition you can make to your setup.

Why Leaf Litter is Essential for Isopods

  • Primary food source — Leaf litter is the staple diet of most isopod species in the wild. As leaves slowly break down, isopods graze on the softening plant material, fungi, and biofilm that develop on the surface — providing a rich, varied, and natural diet.
  • Natural hides & shelter — Layers of leaf litter give isopods countless places to hide, rest, and moult safely away from light and disturbance. This is especially important for vulnerable moulting individuals.
  • Humidity regulation — Leaf litter helps retain moisture within the enclosure, supporting the humid microclimate that most isopod species need. It also contributes to the moisture gradient between the wet and dry sides of the enclosure.
  • Bioactive powerhouse — In bioactive setups, leaf litter is the engine of the ecosystem. It feeds beneficial bacteria, fungi, springtails, and the isopods themselves, driving the natural decomposition cycle that keeps the enclosure clean and balanced.
  • Enrichment & natural behaviour — Foraging through leaf litter is one of the most natural behaviours for isopods. It keeps them active, stimulated, and exhibiting the behaviours they would in the wild.
  • Substrate top layer — Leaf litter works beautifully as a top dressing over your substrate, adding depth, texture, and a truly naturalistic look to any vivarium.

Our leaf litter is dried and prepared to be safe and ready to use straight away in your enclosure. Suitable for all isopod species including Porcellio scaber, Armadillidium vulgare, Cubaris sp., and many more.
